Hi all,

I have a couple of questions for you. When looking at the requirements to sponsor my parents, I noticed the following as a factor for ineligibility:
  • received government financial assistance for reasons other than a disability
I just got accepted into a Master's degree that starts in January for which I will need to obtain student loans from Alberta. Does that count as receiving government financial assistance? Because if that's so, I'd rather wait until I can bring my parents to Canada before starting the program.

Also, I might be looking into buying a house next year. Mortgages are just bank loans, right? The government is not involved in those? Or should I also wait until my parents are here before looking into getting a mortgage?

I know there's the super visa but that doesn't give them access to health care, free ESL languages, etc.

Any help will be appreciated!!

Hi

Government financial assistance = welfare.

Note that to sponsor your parents, you must meet the LICO for 3 years and then be chosen in the lottery. Unless you were working in Canada for several years before you landed or you have a Canadian spouse who meets the LICO, you are many years away from being able to bring your parents here.

Thank you! That's good to know. And yes, I know that I'm at least 3+ years away from being able to apply and that even then, I'd need to be selected in the lottery, but I just didn't want to delay the process even more by getting student loans/a mortgage. That's why I wanted to be sure before even looking into those.

Thanks again.
