If you are United States citizen do we need to provide state police checks for every state we lived in since the age of 18 or is the FBI police clearance sufficient ?

The FBI cert is sufficient. There is some chance CIC may request the State certs later - but this only happens to a small minority of people.

Right I got an email from cic yesterday requesting the police certificates which I submitted with the application , it looks like a generic email would this at all be referencing to state checks or just the original FBI police clearance.

Our lawyer received the same letter today. We already submitted the FBI Clearance with the application; however, our lawyers stated that it would expire in December (dated Feb. 2/15). They recommended requesting a new one and submitting proof that we applied and paid for a new clearance (only 30 days to submit and the processing time is around 4 months). We will send the proof by the deadline and send the hard copy as soon as we receive it (probably in December sometime). Hope this helps!

Please also note that we have a criminal rehabilitation application that has been submitted. Perhaps our lawyer is getting us to update the FBI clearance because the overall processing time could be longer than standard applications.
