I had applied for my wife's temporary resident visa along with my study permit application. Just got message in her GC account that her application has been cancelled because she is able to travel to Canada anyway as a british citizen. However, this only allows her to stay for 6 months at a time, her application was for a 2 year resident visa, i.e. for the length of my study. Any ideas?

There is no such thing as applying for a 2 year resident visa in advance. I am assuming you applied for a TRV. A TRV doesn't allow her to remain in Canada any longer than an eTA.
I would recommend that you apply for a spousal open work permit instead. I don't know when you plan on traveling to Canada, however under current travel restrictions, your spouse will have trouble accompanying you to Canada under an eTA / TRV.
Thanks for your reply. The eta is valid for 5 years starting from 2019 (she visited her relatives in Canada) last year. My program has been deferred to fall 2021 so it relates to travel next year now, hopefully when the travel restrictons are lifted.
