Hello Experts,
I am in such a big dilemma and need expert advise.
I am a Indian citizen and have been completing my 1 year of Work experience in Toronto, Ontario on 15th Dec 2014 and would be gathering all my supporting documents by then so that I can be prepared and send my application under current system.
I will be the principal applicant but my wife passport still has her surname (which was before our marriage). Now before applying for PR , I would like to get her passport updated with surname corrected as my family name.
My questions are
- Is it advisable to start the surname change process in passport now though they mention that it takes 4 weeks so I will still have ample time to be prepared for PR ?
- We both are on work permit currently here in Canada and her Work permit also have her Surname of before our marriage. - Will this affect PR application in anyway as I will be applying PR with her corrected Surname ?
- is it mandatory to attach Dependents work permit letter while applying for PR as I am afraid that Different Surname in Work permit and PR application may create problems ?

Hi Sumeeth,
I would wait for changing surname after getting permanent residency. This is advisable, But If you want to change the surname then start as quickly as you can. Because first you have to apply for change of name then once its approve then you will send that document to indian embassy along with your marriage certificate. Than your waiting time start.

Thank you MJ for your advise. I verified the whole process in India for Marriage certificate attestation from MEA which is first step for Surname change and that itself is quite lengthy process so I will proceed without change in Surname at this point of time and apply PR

Hi Sumit,
I am in the same situation as you. What is your present status. Are you changing your wife's surname? Did you apply for PR?

I have got my marriage certificate signed by MEA in India and now planning to apply for Surname change and my name addition in my wife's passport. I still don't know what would the impact on PR application because in that case I would have old surname on her Work permit but I will be applying PR with updated surname of my spouse
