Hi there,

I am applying for PR under PhD FSW category. I recently got married and in order to keep options open for my husband’s immigration we’ve decided not to add him to my application. Hence, my question is if I can add/sponsor him later after I get my PR? Also, do I have to provide his travel and national identity documents at this stage?

Thanks!

You must add him to your application. You have no choice.

If you do not add him to your application and you land in Canada as "single", you will never be able to sponsor him. In addition, you will have committed misrepresentation by landing as single when you are in fact married. Misrepresentation can result in your PR status being revoked.

Again, you have no choice but to add your husband to your application.

Hey! Thanks for replying. I called CIC few minutes ago and asked the same question. The agent said that I have to provide his relevant information and he will have to undergo medical and security check but I do not need to add him to my application. I can sponsor him after I get my PR and he will have to undergo medicals again. CONFUSION!!! Oh! let me mention that he is outside Canada. Advice?

What the agent meant is that you must add your spouse to your application (i.e. add him as your spouse to the forms and have him complete the medical, security / background check etc.) - but that you can mark him as either accompanying or non-accompanying (i.e. say that you want him to be issued a visa with you and come to Canada with you - or that he will come at a later date). However regardless of which option you select, your husband must be added to your application (even if he doesn't want to come to Canada right now).

If you add your husband to your application and flag him as non-accompanying, then once he is ready to come to Canada, you will sponsor him and he will have to complete all of the paperwork and undergo medicals again.

Makes so much sense :)

Now, I'm gonna bother you again! Sponsoring him will take say 2-3 months (the usual processing time), right? Plus, will adding him (which is compulsory) affect his future application for a Canadian TRV?

How long sponsoring him takes will depend where he's from. To get a rough idea, add the Mississauga processing time (53 days) to the visa office processing time display on the page below.

Yes - his ability to be approved for TRVs could be affected. He can certainly still apply. He'll have to show strong proof that he's coming for a visit only and has no plans to remain in Canada long term.
