Im a canadian citizen and my boyfriend is an international student. We have been living together for over 2 and a half years. We have applied for common law taxes in the past and have the same health care plan, joint bank account and both on the same insurance for the car. We plan on sending our papers tomorrow for spousal sponsorship and an open letter for a work permit . How long will it take till we get approval?
1 more question, his study permit is about expire can we switch it to a visitors visa whilst we wait? and how long would the give him a visitors visa whilst waiting for approval
If you apply inland and apply for an open work permit at the same time, it should give him implied status to continue his stay in Canada until the first stage approval. Getting the first stage approval and open work permit takes around 6 months.
We have all papers needed and think we wont face any difficulties, under what circumstances would they reject a sponsorship? We did his medicals 2 weeks ago and will attach the receipt for medical exam proof. Overall how long would the whole process take before he can receive his residency.
They reject a sponsorship mostly if they think the relationship is not genuine so it is up to you to prove that. They can also reject if the sponsor has a record of violent crime, is in active bankruptcy, is on welfare or has such a low income that it is unclear whether the couple can support themselves without welfare.
If you apply inland, the processing time is given on the CIC website as 6+8 months. Could be faster, could be slower. If you apply outland, it depends on the processing country.
A comrade's broken words on leaving,
His hail of parting at the door:
Your chant of luring, chant of grieving
Will murmur in my ears no more.
Oh, homeland of my spirit's choosing
