Sponsorship and government financial assistance

I am from the US and my husband is sponsoring me from within Canada, he is a Canadian Citizen. I know for spousal sponsorship there is not a certain amount you need to make in order to sponsor but I know you can not be receiving financial assistance.
We have a baby and money is very tight with me not being able to work yet here in Canada. I know this is probably a wrong question to ask but here it goes anyway....

If my husband were to apply for rental assistance just to help us out for a couple of months how would immigration know? Or is immigration automatically informed somehow if he receives assistance?

I don't think Rental assistance is the same as Social Assistance...but I'm sure senior members will know more about it...
