Hello! I became a permanent 3 years ago. I was sponsored by our Dad and I was only a dependent (my Mom was the principal applicant). Now, I married my long-time girlfriend, (now my spouse) and wanted to sponsor her. I’m 21 years old. I’m planning to sponsor her inland.

I saw the requirements to become a sponsor and I got confused.
The first one I’ve read:
  • The sponsor cannot have been sponsored to Canada as a spouse within the last 5 years.
That does not apply to me so I’m ok to sponsor.
BUT, the other one, it says there you can’t apply to be a sponsor if you: “were sponsored and held permanent resident status for less than five years.”

So what’s the real requirement? Are you only not allowed to become a sponsor if you’ve been sponsored by a SPOUSE 5 years ago, or even if you’re not sponsored by a spouse, but sponsored by your father as a dependent children below 18 and held permanent resident status for 3 years you’re still not allowed to sponsor??

Please help. I’m really confused. Thank you!

You can apply to sponsor. The 5 years bar only applies to sponsored spouses/common-law partners.
