Sponsoring someone - I have a criminal record

Hello everyone. I would like to sponsor my fiancee from the United States here in Canada. We are planning to get married in Canada and I can afford to look after her since I am working a full time job and two part time jobs. Here is the catch... I committed a violent crime in 2007 and was convicted in 2008. I served five years in a federal prison for the crime. I was released in 2013 and currently have not had any other problems since (it is now 2018). Can anyone tell me if that is enough time to pass for someone to be able to sponsor someone? I read on the Service Canada site that persons with violent criminal records cannot sponsor anyone but I was wondering if there is a time limit that has to expire before this is no longer considered. The offense was a violent crime against my ex-wife's adulterous partner. We got into a violent fight but I did not harm our children or my ex-wife. It was written up by the police as a K-file unfortunately when I went to prison.

Who can’t become a sponsor
You can’t be a sponsor if you:

• have failed to pay:
  • an immigration loan
  • a performance bond
  • family support payments
• have failed to provide for the basic needs of a previously-sponsored relative who received social assistance
• are under a removal order
• are in a penitentiary, jail, reformatory or prison
• receive social assistance for a reason other than a disability
• are still going through the process of bankruptcy (undischarged bankruptcy)
• were sponsored by a spouse or partner and you became a permanent resident less than five years ago
• sponsored a previous spouse or partner and three years have not passed since this person became a permanent resident
• have already applied to sponsor your current spouse, partner or child and a decision on your application hasn’t been made yet
• were convicted of a violent or sexual offence, or an offence that caused bodily harm to a relative—or you attempted or threatened to commit any of these offences

There are no instructions on how long the prohibition is valid for, so it could be forever. Probably should discuss with an experienced Immigration lawyer.
