Myself(primary applicant in Federal Skilled Worker) and my wife(additional applicant) are making our first landing as PR in Canada soon. We are moving from the USA. We both plan to work ASAP. We plan to sponsor my mother in law at the earliest . My Mother in law is a retired Teacher (aged 56). She does not intend to work in Canada.
My question is
- how soon can we start sponsoring/processing my Mother in law's PR?
- how much funds we need to show for her sponsorship?
- what is the success rate of sponsoring a person who is aged 56+? she does not have any major illness right now, except that she is diabetic and had an angioplasty surgery 3 years ago.
Thanks in advance for your replies/suggestions/views.
You can sponsor her almost as soon as you land but you must be able to show income (job contract? or first couple of payslips?)
Your wife would have to sponsor her because it's her mom but you can co-sign so both your incomes count.
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5196E10.asp will show you how much money you need to make, go to table 4 and add up your family members including mother in law.
I think you should have a pretty good chance of success. It takes a long time to sponsor a parent though.

Actually they cannot start the sponsorship process for the mother, until they have earned the Low Income Cutoff Figure from Canadian sources in the year prior to the application.
Ok, so does that mean 12 months only or do they have to stay a full calendar year? Do they need to provide a tax return and if so, if they manage to make the LICO between the time they land and end of this year, could they start sponsorship early next year?
