Hi there,

My only income is from ODSP. I am getting around 16500$ an year. I on ODSP for mental health reasons.
at the same time I am a student at a Canadian university receiving OSAP. I want to sponsor my mom. My income is not sufficient enough to meet a low income cutoff line of $ 30000 to sponsor my mom.
I heard people on ODSP can sponsor. But they are allowed to make only $ 200 a month without losing the income support. It is conflicting when a person on odsp at maximum can make 16000$ per aunnum . How can they meet low income cut-off and sponsor a family member.

If the immigration allow a co-signer, I have only my uncle to cosign for me. But I have another problem here.
He defaulted on sponsorship agreement when he sponsored his mum 25 years ago. Can he be a valid cosigner. and he is still working .but almost 66 years old. can it create any problem

please help me clarify. any advice will be appreciated.
Thank you

You're confusing income sponsorship rules. There is no income requirement to sponsor a spouse / common law partner. Those on ODSP can still sponsor. However parent sponsorship is different. For parent sponsorship you must meet the minimum income requirements to sponsor. Unfortunately this means you don't qualify (your income would have to be close to $40K to qualify). Your uncle cannot co-sponsor. Only your spouse / common law partner (if you have one) can co-sponsor.

Unfortunately if you stay on ODSP only, you will probably never be eligible to sponsor your mom. If it's just you (no spouse) and your mom is not married, then for family size of 2 the minimum income is approx $40K per year to qualify as a sponsor. There are no exceptions to this, so if you don't make this income you will simply never qualify.

An alternative would be if your mom can travel to Canada as a visitor, you could attempt a H&C application if she has sufficient reasons that returning to her home county would cause harm to her.
