hi,
I have applied for PR under FSW & if everything goes fine; I would be able to get my PR in next 8-12 months. my sis (single mother) has a 8 yr daughter. I am thinking to adopt her daughter; so that I can sponsor her as my (adopted) child once I get my PR.
What could be obstacles for this (what are the points I should take care)? and how much time it may take (once I have PR & sponsoring adopted daughter)?
I would appreciate your suggestions & guidance.
Please reply.
Thanks a lot.
If you adopt her before you get your PR, you need to make sure that you add her to your application before you land. This will increase the proof of funds you need to show and she will need to have a medical as well. It may delay your application a bit.
If you adopt her after you get your PR, you can apply to sponsor her. Sponsoring adopted children is supposed to be under priority so it should not take very long but I do not know exactly how long. I would think less than 6 months.
If you want to sponsor your sister later, you should look into the provincial nominee programs in AB, SK and MB where they have family stream, check if you and your sister fit or could fit the requirements in one of those provinces and take up residence there.
Sometimes the sponsorship application of an adopted child is refused when the child is also a blood relative with parents who are still alive, as in your case. This is because the visa officer might view this as an 'adoption of convenience', done just so you can get a relative into Canada.
You have to prove you really intend to raise her as your child; that your intention really is to develop a parent/child bond with her. So don't just say you want to adopt her because she will have better opportunities in Canada, or because she can go to better schools. Try to develop a closer bond with the child starting now and continuing through the adoption process - start sending money to support her, if possible; take as much interest as possible in her education and activities; try to visit her as often as possible and deveop a close bond. Then include proof of all of this in her PR application.

Thanks a lot for (encouraging) reply and guidance to look into AB, SK, MB (I believe these are state codes); I will look into this & if found that these helps better compare to regular CIC family sponsorship; (once I get my PR) I would try to get job in these states & settle their.
Thanks for showing a new door.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I understand what you are suggesting. Although it is difficult to visit her regularly as I am working USA & she stays in India. But I am planing to adopt her because I want her to provide better environment at home; as there are few issues, which I afraid, are not good for child's development.
I talk to her often (on phone) & take interest in her studies which might be difficult to prove. But thanks for sharing this important point.
