Sponsor already adopted child

Hello! I’m writing to seek advices from someone who have experience in sponsoring adopted child from abroad.

In September 2023, I receiced a certificate of adoption for my child in Vietnam (official and final document for adoption in Vietnam). In December 2023, I submitted my PR application (spousal sponsorship) but didn’t declare my child as I thought it would complicate my case. I got my eCoPR last month.

I’m planning to sponsor my child to Canada but not sure where to start. Also, I’m wondering if I could submit a sponsorship application as if my child is my dependent child, or must go through international adoption process like everyone else.

Strongly recommned you consult a lawyer IMMEDIATELY. Probably not including the child was a serious mistake.

This may be a devastating mistake on your part.

When you apply to become a permanent resident, you have to declare all family members on your application, even if they aren’t coming to Canada. This may include your

• spouse
• common-law partner
• dependent children
• dependent child of a dependent child

There is a Pilot Project that is still in place (it was announced that the Pilot Project has been extended until September 10, 2026), but it will not help you, unfortunately.

Not sure if/how an adopted child would differ, since they would each be a dependent child, right? I concur that a call with a qualified lawyer, posthaste, is the best plan.

I am not claiming it would or should. If the adoption was absolutely complete at that stage, I do not see how it could be otherwise.

But if there is some other way to approach ... answer would be with a lawyer, not me.
