Saw the hearing video, thank you guys that was a very good argument put forward in just 4 mins!!!!
However you guys think the government would budge on it since hearing from what the minister at the end said when I spoke to the Immigration minister 'he said this would not change'.
If this is successful or not it was a good thing to be tried as this shows we did our job, but I just hope they work again on the improving this clause ;D ;D
I really hope Tories lose the upcoming elections. Shame on them.
It is so unfair. Let's face it, Canadian Immigration is not what it used to be anymore and every year it is becoming more and more difficult to come to Canada, to get Visas/Permits, let alone Permanent Residence.
They are doing anything they want. No warnings, no transition periods, just pure disregard for hard working people who came here to work hard...
That's exactly what it means. But that being said, this could change if the Tories loose and the bill is amended. But its safe to say, that start counting 365*4 after PR to apply for citizenship.
The more contentious part of this bill is that the minister can deprive people of citizenship who have committed certain offences. I'd expect this to be revisited if the Tories lose, assuming it hasn't been successfully challenged in court already.

Agreed! Two classes of Citizens will be created with this bill. Naturalized vs. Born in Canada. This will hit people who have dual citizenship the hardest, as those only with Canadian citizenship cannot be left stateless.

Right - Canada could not deprive someone of their only citizenship, by international convention (as I understand it) - I'm interested in what the court says about dual citizens, though...

What irks me the most about this bill is that a minister now has all the power in the world. Application approvals and citizenship cancellation will not be going to Judge anymore. Most likely this clause will be contested in courts.

What is particularly interesting is that this actually applies to the journalist charged and convicted of terrorism in Egypt recently who holds dual citizenship. Not surprisingly the government has said that they will not be revoking Canadian citizenship in this case, but it's easy to imagine that someone who did not have the same profile or who found themselves in trouble after the initial backlash regarding this bill has died down would not be so lucky.
In practice, a journalist convicted by some Egyptian military kangaroo court will never be in danger of losing his citizenship here, but the possibility in theory is enough cause for concern anyway.
