on the "Schedule A Background Declaration," it looks like they expect you to put any situations where you're unemployed and traveling. I assume that refers to long periods of travel (a month plus) and not a situation where you're between jobs and taking a quick, week-long trip?

Kind of. Some people have helpful tips, a sense of perspective, and some have consulted with immigration attorneys. I have my own feelings about what I should do, but extra perspective helps, and my initial impression was wrong on a few things.

Well, on the Supplementary Information - Your Travels form they ask you to document every trip, including for example day trips into the US, if that is any indicator.

Not everybody has to fill out that form, its country specific

Definitely do not have to fill that out. I haven't seen it in my documents.
