Ok, when I sent my original application I put a photo copy of my wife's passport in the application. It seems that other people get requests to send their passport or a copy to the visa office.
Has anyone else sent a photocopy of the applicants passport with the initial application?
It seems like it would be a smart idea as many people get asked later on in the visa process for a passport or photocopy.
I'm applying from South Korea and others who applied from South Korea got the email to send copies of the passport.

I am assuming you are applying from Korea...and according to the guide http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/3907e.pdf which has a document checklist, item 14 Travel Document requires applicants to do so....you did go through your country specific guide to ensure your application included the country specific requirements right?

you are talking about 2 different things. a copy of a passport is a required document for the application, so all applicants send this upfront.
the requests people are getting later in the process are more than likely their passport request. when visa exempt applicants receive passport requests, they are required to send a copy of their passport to the visa office. since they are visa exempt, they do not need to send their physical passport.
these requests are a normal part of the application process. it means the visa office is confirming the information in the applicant's current passport so they can issue the PR visa.
