Seeking advice for study permit extension

Hello all,

I am about to graduate with a master's degree from the University of Waterloo, Canada. This degree that I undertook typically takes 2 years to complete. I was fairly successful in my master's (3.9 GPA, 5 publications, including an award) and wanted to further advance my career by pursuing a PhD. To this end, I successfully got a PhD position in the same department as I currently am but a different lab. I want a PhD because industry jobs in the area I want to work in typically require it (computer vision/machine learning)

My study permit (which I already extended once) expires on Nov 30. I am now beginning to prepare a second application for my study permit extension that would cover my PhD. My offer letter states my funding. The funding covers tuition, living expenses, and rent, so I am fairly covered when it comes to Proof of Funds.

The issue is showing the intent to return to my country. When I initially came to Canada, I was sponsored by my employer who was also ready to hire me when I returned (was stated in an employment letter). Previously, this employment letter served as a strong tie to my country. The question now becomes, how do I demonstrate the intent to return home? Is it crucial to demonstrate this? The immigration consultant at my university mentions study permit extension is straightforward and it shouldn't matter.

Study permit extensions are generally a lot more lax than study permits. Just include the new program length and funding and you should be good

Alright - and being sponsored initially by a company and mentioning that I will return in my SOP does not have any significant bearing on the extension for a PhD?

In addition, I am also considering applying for an FSW PR application. I was worried about dual-intent but the school's consultant said VO don't look at dual-intent if you are already in Canada.

I guess, what I'm imagining is the VO thinking this while having his morning coffee: "hey, this guy had a job offer and was sponsored by a company for his master's. Why is he now seeking a PhD? Why did the company let him go?"
