Security Clearances

Hi everyone;

I finally got a helpful CIC agent on the phone today. She mentioned that we are still in the security clearance phase. I asked her for details and she mentioned that my wife has passed Security and Criminal, and waiting for Prohibition, and I passed Criminal, and waiting for Security and Prohibition. Does anyone know what the different types of checks are and how long they take to clear?

Prohibitions
If you have committed a crime in or outside Canada, you may not be eligible to become a Canadian citizen for a period of time. This includes if you:

• are serving a sentence outside Canada
• are in prison, on parole or on probation in Canada
• are charged with, on trial for, or involved in an appeal of an:
  • indictable offence in Canada
  • offence outside Canada
• have been convicted in the four years before applying for citizenship of an:
  • indictable offence in Canada
  • offence outside Canada

Time in prison, on parole or on probation doesn’t count as time you have lived in Canada.

Does anyone feel they over analysis the background checks? Considering we have to go through a similar(?) process when we become permanent residents?

I say this as my file too is stuck IP since Oct/Nov 2016 due to the prohibitions check. I am a July/Aug 2016 applicant.

There are two types of clearances, one is criminality clearance (RCMP), in my case it took just one day to pass (the date that ECAS changed to IP from AOR). Another one is security clearance (CSIS), since it's hidden in ATIP report, no body can see the status. CSIS clearance is only valid for 4 years, so the one you got during PR application should have expired. That's why a new one is required.

"If a request is missing any of the information noted above, a reply will not be issued. Please allow up to eight weeks for the processing of requests."

I hope that i will receive my test invitation before the 8 weeks !!!

Under The Privacy Act, they should respond in 30 days.

Thanks everyone! I guess we're still stuck in the CSIS portion of the check. Hope they get their reply soon as it's been a while since we applied (December 2016).
