I want to help a family member who is currently in the US to make a refugee claim in Canada. What is the process for initiating a refugee claim under safe third country agreement exemption? Do I need to book an appointment with CBSA? Or should they just go to the border and tell the officer they have a family member in Canada?

How long have they been in the US, what is their status and have they claimed asylum in the US?
