Last year when applying for US green card, I got an employment reference letter. It largely follows the same format as the one required by CIC, and it is addressed to generic "immigration officer" (no mention of USCIS). But the problem is that it is dated September 2016. Since I'm not even yet in the EE pool (let alone having ITA), I was wondering how recent employment reference letter has to be.

If it is your past job then it is fine. If this is your current job, it should be more recent.
