I landed in December and was planning on taking a vacation back to the US at the end of this month. I still have not received my PR card and so thought I needed to reschedule. However, I've read that a PR card is only needed for returning to Canada via commercial carriers (planes and busses). If this is the case, could I drive back to Canada with my COPR, Passport (stamped with my landing date & visitor's visa still active until OCT 2016), and something like a letter from my current employer expecting me back on x date? Thank you!

In your own car? Sure, no problem.

Does it have to be registered in my name? What if I were being driven by my Husband in his car, or my in-laws in their car?

As long as it is a private car (non commercial), it is fine. Doesn't matter who owns it or drives it.

Great! My family will be very happy. Thanks for the quick replies. :)

all that's needed is your COPR and passport. you do not need to provide proof of employment. you're a landed PR, you're allowed to enter without having to prove any more than your PR status.
