Return ticket

Hi guys, I need your input on this one, if I go the US border route, should I have a return ticket when I land in JFK and then take a bus to the US/CAN border? Or I can just tell a US border agent that I'm transiting into Canada via the US and that's why I have only one way ticket? I'm asking this because in the past a person had to have a return ticket when arriving from overseas. Thank you very much for your help! Real life examples are appreciated!
