So my boyfriend and I are common-law almost 2,5 years now and applying for a sponsorship. We've had a verbal rental agreement with the landlord all this time, but we brought up the situation to him and he says he's more than happy to sign a rental agreement now for us to use for CIC showing all he correct dates of our cohabitation.
The only caveat would be dated this year, and not 2,5 years ago - is this something the VO officer will frown upon?
Be careful with anything like that as it could look like fraud/misrepresentation.
I think you’d be better off getting a letter (rather than a backdated rental agreement) from your landlord dated today and listing the dates you moved in etc and that you have been living together. That way there is no question you are trying to pass off a new document as old.

That's what I'm worried about it looking like! We did get a letter from him as well, but of course it would feel better sending this application off with as much proof as possible. We wouldn't be backdating it, it would be our rental agreement with the dates of the tenancy from when it began 2 years ago, but it would be signed with, say, today's date. Does it make sense? Or would they find it weird?
I'm just confused about it because hypothetically, if a rental agreement is changed at some point during the tenancy, you would have to update the document, in which case this would happen (new document signed way after the rental agreement first began).
I would include a letter from the landlord as opposed to a new contract, just stating how long you've lived there, your rent etc. You could have it notarized as well.
Rental receipts were listed on the CIC website as proof I remember.
Also, dont forget to file your taxes as common law
