1. It depends, if CIC doesn't accept your excuse for missing the test, (travel is not acceptable) then you application is closed and you start again. see: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/bulletins/2013/ob476B.asp
2. If they accept your excuse, then it could be anywhere up to a year, depending on the office.

While travel is not an acceptable excuse, CIC error is. If you informed CIC Call Centre about your trip and they scheduled you for a test anyway, you should have included this information in your letter requesting a new test date. If you did not, you should write another letter restating your request to reschedule due to CIC error. Include any information that can back-up your assertion that the Call Centre was informed of your absence, such as the agent's name, the time and date of call, or even a call log showing that you called 1-888-242-2100, if you called on a cell phone.

thanks eileenf
the reason for missed test is that i didn't received the letter from cic(i lived at apartment); i found out the test on cic website after the test date. which is true :'(
i wrote the letter to cic in the mid of Feb, I had a booked trip on the end of Feb. so i requested new test date after March 1. (bad move!)
cic update my request of rescheduleing in mid of March on their system.
no news from cic since then

That wasn't a bad move. That was smart.

but i wanna a test date :'(
i check cic online status and my mail box every day! can't plan any vacation for 2014. so afriad miss the 2nd test which would be the last and only chance.
that's a mental torture!!!

CIC is not very accommodating when you want to reschedule. Basically they will do it when it suits them and you are left waiting and yes, no way to take a vacation for more than a week at a time because they might schedule you when you are away.

Hi, I missed my citizenship test scheduled at the end of Jan 2014 at St clair, toronto since i was relocating from Toronto to Windsor and received the mail late and didn't check online:( I email cic in feb and send letter one in mar another in june and third in July. I know 2 people who missed the test after me and took 2nd test couple of months back and i am still waiting ......the reason for missing test for all of us was same...mail delay. i don't know how the officers schedule but i think it solely depends on ur luck and the officer. Everytime i contacted call center denied receiving any letter from me but after the third letter...they did admit that they received my mail (surprisingly i always send registered mail and so i am sure it reached the right person)and ......but still nothing.....no dates yet. My last pay check at Toronto was just 4 days prior to cic letter still they are not rescheduling me. I am not losing hope and trying to update others in the same boat and get suggestions if any.

I ever read in a forum, a woman postponed the oath because she needed to go to other city on that day as part of her job from her company, and informed CIC. Instead of giving her a new date, CIC sent her an RQ right away. After she replied the RQ, CIC never got back to her for more than a year. It's not good to show them that you have a trip more important than the citizenship thing. Some reasons may make sense to them, like delivering a baby, surgery, etc, but not a trip or job call.

What if I am away I am called for a test? Can I re-schedule it then or should I inform them in advance of the dates I will be away?
