With no credit history and no job, how should I go about renting an apartment that is around $1800 a month? All I can think of are these 2 options but not sure how effective:
1. Offer to pay 1-2 more months of deposit (in addition to the half month allowed by law)
2. Show the landlord my bank statement. Well, how much is convincing enough?

Landlords tend to be more amenable if you are open about your circumstances. Ask them what they would accept, rather than trying to bamboozle your way in.

I will be at an AIRBNB the first month then looking for a 12 month lease rental. Only by looking at the ads that some requires credit check/employment proof, that's why want to get prepared. Even so, I think paying a 6 month rent is too much for a seen place as something still can go wrong during the stay. I'll accept 2 the most.
Yes, I think the only way is to be open about my situation. Hearing about the sub 1% vacancy rate in Vancouver, just a bit worried.
I wouldn't pay more than a month or two in advance, but you can always give them post dated cheques for the year. Might be worth bringing a credit check done in your home country with you when you land. Or previous references with e-mail addresses for the landlord.
You may also try Burnaby where the rent is slightly cheaper than Vancouver. Though it's far from downtown, if you have car or you are fine with skytrain, the distance should not be an issue.
