Renewal of Study Permit

I have a four year study permit which expires next year. Last year, I could not enroll for the Winter and Summer semesters because of the discontinuation of funding from my home country. Consequently, I secured a new PhD admission with funding and have been progressing excellently well. However, since Fall last year, I applied for change of institution, but have not received any response from CIC. My worry is that my study permit expires next year October 2020, and I would apply for an extension. Would my extension be rejected, even though I would have been continuously enrolled for two years non-stop? By not remaining continuously enrolled in the past, is my study permit still valid?
