Some of you applying Inland might be happy to know this information I just found out.

I called H&R Block, and asked

'If my husband is not yet a permenant resident / landed immigrant, but we have our sponsorship application in the works (will take 18 months to get a PR) can I still claim his as a dependant'

They said yes it doesn't matter because he does have a VISA (Visitors) and a permenant address here (we just bought our first home together) ... Which will really help out. I did it with my Ex husband and one year got a 3 K return!

Do you know if I could claim my husband even if he is not here????

I wouldn't think so because you're not 'supporting him'

Us who apply inland are expected to fully support our spouses while we are in the application process, which is 18 months.

So if someone makes 40,000 $ a year, that is for two people to live off of, huge tax break because of that....

That's why when they are here, living off your wage they are a 'dependant' :)

Does your husband have a SIN number ?

No he's not PR or LI yet ... I told her that (tax lady) she said it didn't matter, he has a physical address here, and we have proof he's living here and dependant on my wages to survive.

My husband doesn't have a sin number and he is dependant on my salary and I don't make 40, 000 a year...

I had in mind that I could put him on my taxes but I guess maybe I was wrong...

Does he live with you ? or did you guys apply outbound and live apart?

40K was just a number I threw out there

Not sure if this matters but I am a full time student and when I do my osap application I have to claim my husband and put 0000000 or 9999999 instead of the sin number....

maybe thats why i thought I could put him on my income tax ...

outbound... he is in jamaica and im in ontario... :(

good news everyone... I just called H & R block... i asked if the spouse if outside of the country could be claim them as a dependant... I was advised that as long as I can prove that I am supporting him that they can put them as a dependant... So this being by western union transactions etc...

from what the lady said... i told her we were doing an outbound application and that my hubby didn't have a sin number and she said it doesnt matter...

If I don't have a SIN number can my partner still put me as his dependent?
Won't it get us in trouble if he doesnt put the SIN number where it's requested?

( I am in Canada and I have applied through INLAND route)

as long as you depend on your spouses salary... you can put placed as a dependant now because you are in canada they do not require proof like western union transactions...

When I was dealing with tax stuff this past august they told me that i had to put my husband down even though he was in the uk and didn't have a sin number. They told me to inlcude a letter stating why he didn't have a letter and what is current earnings to date were in the uk. They used it to caculate our HST rebates. They told me i would have to do the same thing on this years taxes if he wasn't here yet-which he isn't.
