LANDED..........
CANNOT WAIT!
Hi everyone,
I have a couple of questions regarding the PRTD. My husband will hopefully be here in the next month or so, however, his work contract back home is going to finish in September...so he needs to travel back home once he lands in Canada.
I understand once of the options is to land in September once his contract is over (his meds are valid until December), but I would really like him to be here with me for a little while as we haven't seen each other since August (he has a 3 week vacation) and I don't have an option of going to see him because of school+work.

Now, he won't be able to get his PR card in 3 weeks for sure, so: does he need to apply for a TD from the country he will be traveling from (Afghanistan) or can he apply for it in Canada and then take it with him when he goes back? Also, how long does it usually take to get a TD? and I read somewhere that is it up to the officer's discretion whether or not he/she wants to approve his application for the TD; is this true?

Thanks

Hi,
unfortunately you cannot apply for the PRTD in advance from Canada. You have to apply it from outside Canada in the country you are in.

I suggest, let him come to Canada, do the landing and ur vacation. Then when he goes back, if his stay back in Afghanistan is longer that the PR Card wait time ( 73 day) then dont bother with the PRTD. Just wait for the PR card to arrive in the mail and send it to him via Courier or by hand with someone.
Second option is that, when he goes back, he can apply for a PRTD. However, they do want to see a confirmed return ticket if you apply for the PRTD.
hope this helps.

Thank you SO much for this information! I didn't know he needed to show a confirmed returned ticket to Canada to be able to apply to the TD, that's very helpful! I really appreciate your response

Although it doesn't say on the checklist for the Confirmed return ticket, i have read it on the CIC website.

Why would a returning permanent resident need a return ticket. They should be able to travel on a single ticket.they are not a visitor who is required to leave Canada.

I think he/she meant that the applicant needs a confirmed ticket to Canada.

.

The applicant needs to show that they have a confirmed ticket back to Canada, for you to be eligible for the PRTD.

This is in cases if you need it urgently. If you dont need it urgently, the ticket requirement might not be applicable to you.

If you are outside Canada and applying to get back to Canada then you do not require a return ticket.
Yes if you are leaving Canada and then returning you would already have a return ticket.

Travel document based on a single ticket into Canada will be fine.

If you are requesting Urgent processing on your application, you do need one. This is to prove that you want to travel before this date.

Other wise ur application will take the usual time.

.

You are focused on the word "return".

The point here is that they want to see your intent of going back to Canada.

You cannot apply for a PRTD from inside Canada , SO when ur outside Canada and would like to get a PRTD urgently, you need to show them ur ticket for ur travel to Canada.
