My common-law partner and I went to the United States to visit family last month and then returned to Canada 4 days later. When he crossed the border into Canada this time, the officer did not stamp his passport nor issue a new Visitor Record which I suppose could mean that he is allowed to visit for 6 months from the date of entry, but he already has a visitor record asking him to leave this month.
Does his status as a visitor expire this month when the visitor record from last year expires or does his status continue for 6 months from his most recent date of entry?
I guess we will request an extension of his current visit, but I'm wondering if his status is really expiring this month. People say that a VR is no longer valid once you leave the country, but I don't actually think that is correct.

I still think that once you leave Canada, and re-enter Canada, you stay if unstamped is good for 6 months from time you re-entered Canada.
That being said, this thread is meant for those who have family sponsorship. Best to post this message on an appropriate thread relating to visitor to Canada.

It is correct that your VR expires if you leave the country. It's in s. 183(4) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.
Just apply for the extension. Whether you use the date they stamped his passport or the date of his most recent entry, he still has status. That status is automatically extended as "implied status" once he files the extension application, so he can remain in Canada until they make a decision on his extension application.
