Hello, I am new here and I'm hoping to have help and information.
I am currently working in Canada and have a closed-work permit and TRV which is valid till January, 2024. I submitted my application for permanent residence (under CEC category) from Canada at the end of June, 2023. I need to go to Europe for work purposes for about one week in mid-Sept., 2023.
(a)I would like to know whether any step I need to complete before having e-COPR which will not be possible during my one-week stay outside Canada.
(b)If I get my e-COPR before or during my stay outside Canada, can I re-enter Canada from Europe by using e-COPR? Would anyone please suggest what I should do in that case?
Welcome! So during the process - Portal 1 - IRCC will ask you to declare if you are in Canada at that moment. If you are outside at the time you receive Portal 1 you can do two things; 1) wait until you return to Canada to respond to portal 1 since you will only be away for one week. 2) You can respond immediately to portal 1 and let them know that you are currently outside of the country and 'this is' your return date. IRCC will pause the process until you inform them of your return.
My suggestion in this case is to wait the few days until you get back to Canada. Getting the process paused and restarted will create some delays. Additionally, if COPR is issued while you are outside of Canada you can not return on it. Also your work permit and TRV would be invalid at that time. You will need to apply for a PRTD to return to Canada and that takes weeks to get.
To re-enter Canada with an e-COPR, follow these steps: 1. Obtain the e-COPR confirming your permanent residence. 2. Prepare required documents and check travel restrictions. 3. Present your passport and e-COPR to immigration officers upon arrival and complete the landing process. Stay updated on immigration policies and consult official sources for accurate information.
You can not enter Canada on a eCOPR because all your temporary resident documents would be invalid. Once eCOPR is issued your TRV, work permit, study permit, visitors' record, etc are all invalid because you are now a permanent resident. To return, you will need a PRTD which you have to apply for through PR portal.
The only difference here, is if COPR was issued by a Canadian visa office in your country. At that time the VO would have also given you a PR visa for landing purposes. So you can not enter Canada on a eCOPR, you will need a PRTD.
