When I got my first health card they gave me a paper saying I had been approved for OHIP that also had the start date of my coverage. My memory is a bit spotty, so I'm not sure if I am recalling correctly, but I don't think I was given a number at that time.

Either way, you can't use the health insurance until its start date, which would be 3 months after you become eligible. In the meantime it's a choice between private health insurance and taking the risk.

I had private health insurance that I had bought for a year, then when I got OHIP coverage I faxed them a copy of OHIP, and they refunded the amount I had paid past the OHIP effective date. It cost me a little over $800 to get private health insurance, so after my refund I think I ended up paying a total of $200-something for private health insurance in the meantime.

thank you, Karlshammar.
no, I do not have a temporary card, so I guess I have to wait for 3 months. don't they give me even a temporary number while waiting for it?

thank you for your reply.
do we need to have a proof pf funds while landing if I will have a sponsor there with me?

You don't need to have proof of funds regardless of whether your sponsor is there or not, because there is no financial requirement for spousal sponsorships.

I landed by myself and all I had was my passport with the visa and my COPR. I had brought the original certified copy of my birth certificate since I had heard that they will sometimes request to see that, but in my case they did not.

I only brought my passport with visa and my COPR. My sponsor was not with me. They did not ask for anything else.

I also found all the answers on this site.
