I've been googling all evening and still haven't found a clear answer, so I'm hoping someone here can help me.

I would like to marry a Canadian (I'm an American residing in Australia), but he has a criminal conviction from the 90s, essentially the equivalent of inciting a group to riot, although he was not personally convicted of any kind of assault or anything like that. He served four months of a one year sentence and has never been in trouble since.

I don't understand how Canada classifies crimes and if his would count as a violent crime as per the sponsor requirements. Does anyone know if he would be barred from sponsorship?

Any advice would be appreciated; we are really struggling to find a way to make our relationship work as his conviction is a problem for him to immigrate anywhere. We just want to settle down and have a quiet life and start a family. Thanks in advance for any answers.
