So we just filed our 2012 taxes (yessssss, my husband is a terrible procrastinator; my U.S. taxes were filed back in February). We used my father-in-law's tax guy. The guy is pretty...special in some ways. I assume he's pretty good at what he does, as my father-in-law is very savvy and has very high standards. However, one thing seems strange to me.
I am currently staying with my husband in Québec on a temporary resident permit while my inland PR app is being processed. I have not received AIP yet. Our tax guy didn't give us any trouble about my husband claiming me as a dependent with me not having a SIN, but he did tell us that I owe the province of Québec $200 for health care. This seems weird, as I don't even qualify for provincial health insurance yet, nor have I used any health service in Québec. I did receive medical care in Ontario once, but I'm covered under my husband's insurance, since he's a federal employee (military).
Has anyone else had to pay tax to Québec for health care before qualifying for insurance?
