My visit visa was refused to day with a single reason:
• The purpose of visit is no longer valid as the dates of the event have since elapsed.
I applied for a visit visa on 27th of FEB to attend a conference on June 30th. I received a correspondence today with the above reason. I was told canada issues visas even if an invitation has expired. Why did they reject mine?.

Not true. IRCC may not issue a TRV if your conference has passed. You wanted to come to the conference, so why would IRCC approve it now? Did you apply for the conference and tourism? Was your profile very strong to return home? If you want to come to Canada as a visitor for tourism purposes then reapply.

Thanks for the reply. And, what does this say about my application, does it mean if the purpose of visit was still valid they were going to approve the visa?.

It doesn't necessarily mean that.

No your application may still have been refused. You said you wanted to attend a conference, so your denial was that the conference was over.
