I have been living abroad for several years and taking care of a young child, so not working. My question is, I will be moving back to Canada where I will start the spousal sponsorship application for my partner, but as I have not been working for so long, how can I prove that I can support him? I intend to start working upon arrival in the country, but I also want to start the application as soon as possible. Do I need to wait until I've been working for a certain amount of time before I can prove my ability to support him?
No. Its perfectly fine if you're not working and even if you've been financially dependant on your spouse (the principal applicant). Several sponsors are students or full time stay-home moms who successfully sponsor their spouses. All you need to do is to Explain to the visa officer how you will support yourselves without asking for welfare from the govt for the length of sponsorship undertaking. You can use things like joint finances, your family's savings, your family's investments, employability, income potential... they basically want to see a well thought out plan backed by supporting docs. If you're a citizen, you can even sponsor your spouse while being outside Canada as loog as you can show "Proof of intent to return to Canada" once your spouse gets approved for PR. A lot of material on this on the forum. Search for "Proof of intent".
