I am applying for permanent residence for my spouse. He is an American citizen. It asks in the document checklist for proof of status in Canada. He is currently only a visitor in Canada. All he needs for entry to Canada is his passport and he did not receive a stamp when he entered. What can I use as proof of his visitor status? What document do I need to provide?

Just write a short letter of explanation, and provide anything you have (eg plane ticket/boarding pass). If he does not have, eg entered by land, provide best known info about place/date/time of crossing. If they scanned his passport, they can confirm that information.
