The Application for both PRC/Travel doc uses IMM544. I need a travel o/s in November. Do I need a separate travel document? My new PRC card renewal will
not make it back in time. Do I need that PRC Travel Document separately? If so where do I get it? I have been 57 years a Resident in Canada, a British citizen.

What's a PRC / PRC travel document? Do you just mean PR card / PR travel doc (aka PRTD)?
Assuming so:
-apply for the PR card now. It probably won't be ready in time - but it might.
-as a British passport holder, by far your best option is to return via the USA and a land border crossing, where you will not need the PR card. Eg fly to Detroit or to Buffalo.
Where are you travelling to/for how long? You can apply for the PRTD a bit before departing and - if you're in a place with an embassy/consulate long enough - you should be able to get it approved / stamped before too too long.
You will need either the valid PR card or PRTD in your passport to return by air to Canada.
And geez, save yourself this trouble down the road- apply for citizenship.

I'm aware they are now the same form. I'm still suggesting: apply now for PR card. Use the same form, ticking the appropriate box, to apply before departure for PRTD (if you cannot travel through USA for some reason).
Geez was not a comment on age (except perhaps my own for even using that expression).
"Geez" = Jeez = 'mild expression of surprise, delight, dissatisfaction, or annoyance.'
In this case, surprise that you hadn't just got around to getting citizenship to avoid such hassles.
