Hi Forum members,

The criteria for PR renewal eligibility - as defined here is 730 Days during the last 5 years.

When exactly does this 5 year period start?
- Is it from the day this PR holder landed in Canada the first time?
OR
- Is it the day the application of PR was approved? (in CIC portal?)
OR
Some other specific date?

Also, I see that to be eligible for renewing PR the person needs to be in Canada for 730 days on a rolling basis and one can apply for renewal was early as 9 months before the current PR card expires.

Based on this, there's confusion for the below case:
Person Landed Canada on Sept 15th 2020 (Day 1 physically present),
--> Come 2025; PR holder applies for renewal on say 15th March 2025 which is the PR renewal Application date (i.e. 6 months before current card expires)
--> Now, what start date does Canada use to determine this person's 5 year period? Is it Sept 15th 2020 OR 15th Feb 2020
(15 March 2020 as it's application date - 5 years; But this person didn't become a PR officially until the landing date is what I understand)

Can someone who knows this please shed some light on the criteria. Much thanks in advance..!

It starts on the day you landed in Canada and became a PR.

Thanks..

So, In case a person applies for card renewal a few months earlier than it expires - would the 5 year period go back to a date before they became a permanent resident?

The five year period technically would but not the days that can be included in the 730 day count. Only days after becoming a PR can be counted towards the residency requirement.

One more thing... For applying the citizenship, one needs to be physically in for 3 years (1095 days) in the 5 year period.
Does this 5 year period get counted backwards from the citizenship application date? or some other date?
