PR card required fo exit Canada?

My wife and her dependant son will enter Canada as PRs, however her son will return to China to finish his college program.
After he enters Canada for the first time does he have to stay until he gets his PR card before leaving, or can he leave after a week and later we can bring the card to him when we visit China again in a few months?
