PR Card Renewal -Name Change

Hi,

I have a valid PR card. However my last name has changed since I have divorced outside Canada. May I apply to renew my PR card while I am living outside Canada?

You need to be in Canada in order to renew the PR card. You can't renew it outside Canada.

If your passport name and PR card name does not match, the airlines may not let you board the flight. You may need to apply for PRTD (Permanent resident travel document) in your country where you are currently staying and write all the explanation about your divorce including divorce certificate and name change due to divorce and all other relevant details etc and once you get the PRTD then you can fly back to Canada and renew the PR card in Canada.

Actually I didn't change my passport name, so my PR name matches with my passport name. I think my other option is to fly Canada with my current passport, PR card and divorce paper, then renew PR card in Canada?

Much better do it in Canada

However, you should check if divorce papers are enough to change name here, probably yes.

You'll need a passport with your new name for future travels , but better apply for it within Canada

Check cic's website about pr card renewal for name change and once you are back to Canada, submit the documents accordingly.

Read the name change section.

You may have to renew your passport too for the name change after the divorce so that the name matches with the PR card. You need to renew your passport for the name change and then you can apply to renew pr card for name change. I hope there is an embassy in Canada for your passport renewal.
