Hi,

I am new to this forum and I am in the process of sponsoring my husband, US green card holder, to Canada. We are still gathering all the documents that are required....and we hope to mail the application by the end of February. However, I would like to know if there are people in this forum who have done it before. Also, how long does it take to sponsor a green card holder to Canada?

This is going to be an outland application as my husband is still working in USA.

Ps: I am Permanent resident in Canada and our wedding was in Canada in 2013.

Please help

Can please someone respond?

What country does your husband hold a citizenship for? And how long has he been working in the US?

If CIC decides to process his application based on his US residency, the app would be processed at CPP-Ottawa, and the average time for processing there is around 10 months or so.

However CIC could also decide to process the app based on his citizenship, so timing for that would depend on the visa office that serves his home country.

You can request what office you prefer, but the final choice is up to CIC.

As a PR, you will need to remain in Canada during the entire processing time. You can leave Canada for temporary/short vacations (say around 3 weeks), but need to keep your residence in Canada.

My husband is from Congo, Kinshasa....He's been working in USA for 1 year and 3 months now. He arrived in USA in 2012 as a green card holder

Hi Rob, does he mean that they can even send him back to Congo for his interview? We chose New York as Visa office because the Michigan one is now closed.

If they process his app as a US resident it will still go to CPP-Ottawa. New York would only the the location of any potential interview he may need.

If CIC decides to process based on citizenship, the office would be Nairobi, Kenya. In this case the interview would be held there.

Hopefully they process him based on his US green card status. I would write a cover letter in the application stating the importance of keeping the office location in America.

Thank you I will surely do that
