Hello,
I have a question regarding the sponsorship of my husband. We are finally ready to begin the sponsorship process after 4 years of being married. I was with my husband for a few months in his country and when I came back to Canada I came to my family in New Brunswick. Because my family is not extremely wealthy and the unemployment rate is high here in the small town I live in, I could not find a job or support myself so I had to go on Welfare for 5 months. I am NOT on welfare anymore, I am now a Human Resources student and I get Student Loan funding which I will be paying back myself.
My question is, I am off welfare now, can I apply to be a sponsor for my husband? Or is there a period of time of not being on Welfare anymore that I must wait out before I apply to sponsor him?
If someone could please help me with this or tell me who can, that would mean the world! Thanks!
If you are in default of a previous sponsorship undertaking
Relatives you sponsored in the past received social assistance or welfare while the undertaking was valid.
You may not sponsor until you repay the full amount of any social assistance or welfare payment or repay the debt to the satisfaction of the government authority that issued the benefit or ordered you to pay.
If you are in default of an immigration loan
You received a transportation, assistance or Right of Permanent Residence Fee (previously called the Right of Landing Fee) loan and have missed payments or are in arrears.
You may not sponsor until you pay all arrears on your loan. For more information, contact Collection Services at 1-800-667-7301 (in Canada and the United States only).
If you are in default of support payment obligations
You were ordered by a court to make support payments to a spouse or child and have neglected to do so.
You may not sponsor until you resolve the family support matter.
If you are in default of a performance bond
You agreed to pay money to guarantee that an immigrant would fulfil his or her obligations under immigration legislation.
You may not sponsor until you pay the full amount of the bond.
This list i got from cic website check anything that applies to you

Thank you, but none of these apply to me

I am not on welfare anymore. I am wondering if there is a timeframe that I have to be off of it for before I can sponsor my husband.
It says repay welfare amount somewhere but you can do some thing write a covering letter or if there is any column like that sayno
I prefer you start applying since your doubt is with sponsorship only if you start process if you are not eligible you mayget reply in a month or 2 in which case you may fix if anything wrong

Thank you very much for your advice. But I am still unsure on a few things.
So, you mean they want me to pay back the 5 months of welfare that I needed to use to survive for a while? The government in our province does not require you to pay that back, so I don't understand why they would make me do that. You say there is a way around that. Can you please elaborate?
One more thing, you think I should apply now even after being off welfare/social assistance for only a few days? Should I give some time for things to update to say that I am a student now and not on Social Assistance? I am just so confused.
But thank you so much once again for your advice, I really appreciate it!

Ignore the previous poster.
You are not required to pay back any welfare you have received in the past.
There is no minimum time that a person must be off of welfare. In order to sponsor, you must be able to show that you and your spouse will be able to support yourselves without welfare.
