My boyfriend and I live in Cape Town, South Africa and are looking to come work in Canada, he has an Irish passport, so he applied for a study/work visa and recently had it approved and got 4 years. I am now looking to apply for a visa but am not sure which yo apply for? We have been living together for more than a year, I am a early childhood educator and own my own school in Cape Town, can anyone point me in the right direction! My boyfriend will only leave to Vancouver ( where he has family ) once I get some sort of visa sorted out as we want to do this together! Thank you!
Since you are common law (have lived together for at least a year), you can apply for an open work permit based on his study permit. Note that there is no guarantee you will be approved. To have the highest chance of approval, you should show that you have strong ties to your home country and plan to return there once your partner completes his studies in Canada.
If you have further questions, I'd recommend you read through the posts on this subject in the Foreign Workers section of the forum.
