hey now.
my fiance lives in edmonton. after thinking i was going to be sponsored as a temporary foreign worker, i find out the guy who was gonna hire me never asked his boss and led me on. im a carpenter by trade, i have many tickets that can be valid in edmonton.
i need to work while my fiance plan our wedding, get married, and get the paperwork for her to sponsor me and to become a permanent resident. she has some medical problems and does go on medical ei, right now she goes to physiotherapy everyday of the week for 8 weeks at lifemark over at the meadowlark health center, but after the 8 weeks is up she can go back to work, but her health isnt the greatest because a doctor misdiagnosed her as having kidney disease and took out a kidney only to find out she has teathered cord and because of the many experimental surgeries she had as a kid they cant even do the surgery to fix teathered cord because it might leave her paralyzed. on top of that her other kidney is at 50%)
i am pleading with you all to help me. i had everything down pat. now i am just cold calling people for work and hitting dead end after dead end. i have my resume in with merit and other places, but they all require that i have a work visa already.
am i eligible for an open work permit? if we just get married can i get an open work permit easier so i can work while the residency paperwork is going through? i just want to be there to help her walk up the stairs, do the dishes, help her with stuff around the house and rub her back when she falls asleep so she can live in less pain. i love her so much. but the months are starting to pass and nothing is getting done.
ive tried cic and service canada, i cant find the information on open work permits anywhere.
If you were to marry your fiance now, your wife could sponsor you (assuming she is a Canadian citizen or PR) for a PR visa under the family class. If you could share a bit more info we can try to help you
1. Do you have a visa to visit Canada (a tourist visa)? If not, what is your citizenship?
2. Could you afford to live in Canada without working while waiting to hear back on your application?
3. Have you ever lived with your fiance? If so, if you lived together for a year you may be eligible for a common law sponsorship.
4. To give you a sense of how long this would take, where do you live now? what is your citizenship?
i am from new york. turnaround time for a work visa at the buffalo consulate is about 2 months.
i cant afford to live in canada without working.
ive stayed with my fiance for months at a time, but not 1 year. if its sponsorship its gonna be marriage and it would have to be done through justic of the peace, which is something she doesnt wanna do- understandably she wants a real wedding.
like i said im an american citizen so turn around for the work visa is 2 months (after lmo- but im trying to get open work visa so i can bypass the lmo step). for the sponsorship, after 88 days of processing in canada it takes up to 11 months at the buffalo consulate.
i really need to work while i am up there. its just not possible. can my fiance sponsor meet the income requirements even if she is on ei for periods of time?

I'm not familiar with open work permits so hopefully someone else chimes in to help you with that option. From http://www.canadavisa.com/canadian-immigration-open-work-permits.html it seems like she'd have to be a foreign temporary worker or student, though.
It sounds like you are familiar with spousal sponsorship so you may know this already but some thoughts:
- Since you lived together for months at a time, how long were the breaks? If it was a few short breaks in between, you can still count the time toward the year requirement for common law and the common law status continues as long as you have continued your relationship after that 1 year even if you haven't lived together in the immediate past 12 months.
- I get wanting a big wedding and your wedding should be very special. Some people have had smaller civil wedding so they can apply while they plan for the bigger wedding.
- You can have multiple applications working through the system in parallel so the sooner you start the sponsorship the sooner you'll have PR status.
- She can sponsor you as long as the government assistance she receives is for her disability
[size=7pt]From http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse-apply-who.asp
You may not be eligible to be a sponsor if you:
failed to provide financial support you agreed to when you signed a sponsorship agreement to sponsor another relative in the past
defaulted on a court-ordered support order, such as alimony or child support
receive government financial assistance for reasons other than a disability
were convicted of an offence of a sexual nature, a violent criminal offence, an offence against a relative that results in bodily harm or an attempt or threat to commit any such offences—depending on circumstances such as the nature of the offence, how long ago it occurred and whether a pardon was issued (See Sponsorship Bar for Violent Crime below)
were previously sponsored as a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner and became a permanent resident of Canada less than 5 years ago (See Five-year Sponsorship Bar for persons who were sponsored to come to Canada as a spouse or partner below)
defaulted on an immigration loan—late or missed payments
are in prison or
have declared bankruptcy and have not been released from it yet.
Is your fiance Canadian? If so, then unfortunately you don't qualify for an open work permit. Even if you married her, you still wouldn't qualify for one.
If she sponsored you inland, you would qualify for an open work permit approximately 11 months after submitting the application.
Unfortunately the most you can really do is keep looking for an employer who is willing to offer you a job and go through the LMO process to get approval to hire you. As you've said, this won't be a short process. However that's really the fastest option available to you right now.
