Permanent Resident Renewal

I am in the process of renewing my wife's and stepsons permanent resident card because it is expiring shortly. They have made the physical presence in Canada obligations to renew the card but I find it strange that the document checklist is asking for a photocopy of his birth certificate if he is under 18 years old.

Is it required (birth certificate) even though I sponsored them into the country already and the 5 year renewal date is approaching?

Probably best to follow the instruction and provide the required information rather than make it up on your own.
