I'm about to lodge my application for Student Permit. I just have a doubt on one thing. My passport's validity will be until April 2018. And I applied for Jan 2018 intake.
1. Will this affect my application? Or can I just renew my passport when I reach Canada?
As much as possible I don't want to renew yet coz I have my previous visas on it from other countries, and when I renew I will be changing my last to my husband's last name.
2. Or can I apply using my old passport and after (maybe) visa approval, I will after then renew?
Depending on your country, renewing from Canada can take anywhere between a week to 3 months or even more. Time may run short for you.
You may get rejected for study permit as after course start date, you have only 4 months left. Guideline asks for min 6 months validity. Although if they calculate it from application day, you will be fine.
It will be wiser to renew it now as you have sufficient time for January session. Also you are in home country; things will run faster there.
Best is to renew it before you submit your student permit application.
Among the passport requirements stated are " Your passport must be valid for the duration of your expected length of stay in Canada." and "Please note that we cannot issue a visa beyond the expiry date on the passport." when I received the CIC letter to submit my passport for visa stamp in reference to my successful application.
If you want them to know about the history of your previous visas from other countries (i.e. to increase your success rate), you can always scan a copy of your old and new passports during application.
And it may take up few weeks to months to get a new passport from home country while in Canada. You don't want to stress yourself out during the first few months of your landing, right?
