Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
Hi all. I'm a US citizen and plan on going to live with my boyfriend in Canada next year. My plan is to live with him for the 12 months necessary for a common law PR application and I just want to make sure of some things.

I don't have the passport book, I have the card. I know I can only travel by land with the passport card, but are there any other drawbacks to having the card instead of the book? Will having just a passport card cause any problems in the long run when I apply for common law?

Another thing is that with the passport card there are no stamps, so how do I know how long the officer at the border allows me to stay when I enter?

Lastly, will my boyfriend need a passport to sponsor me once we're ready for the PR application? I figure it's probably a good idea for both of us to have passports anyway in case we encounter border issues or something, but I just thought I'd ask.

I'd appreciate if someone could help me out with these questions. Thanks!

Get a passport now. You will need a passport to apply for PR (a passport card isn't accepted). I believe you also need a passport in order to request an extension to your visit (which you'll need to do if you want to stay a full 12 months).

Alright, I'll definitely get going on that. Thanks for the information!
