I have a visitor visa which expires in December 2013. Can my wife sponsor me via an outland spousal application without me leaving? (I would have to withdraw my inland application asap. It has not been acknowledged yet)
I'd like to stay around because my wife is expecting.
Yes - your wife can submit an outland application for you.
If you want to stay past December 2013, you will have to apply for an extension to your visit. Unlike the inland process, applying outland does not give you implied status. You will have to keep on extending your visit until your PR visa is approved.

Yes but you still have to apply to extend your stay as a visitor the whole entire time you stay! Did you request an open work permit along with your inland application?
Sure, the idea would be to submit Outland application in November 2013 and then submit a paper application for visitor visa extension 2 weeks to expiry of current visitor visa in December. By the time my wife gets first stage approval, the visitor extension result will not be back.
And when a decision is finally made (whether negative), outland application will be moving. At that time I wouldn't mind leaving as our first child will hopefully be here
