In general what does it take to open up a bank account in Canada? Like a proof of address?
On the other hand, how can we obtain the very first credit card? My girlfriend will be studying as a student, can she get a card without previous credit history?
Any form of government photo ID usually does the trick. I don't recall them asking me for proof of address thought I do know the banks use address information to verify you for phone banking. Though they might ask for proof if you are not a PR or citizen. Workpermit might be helpful. Telephone number as well.
There are several banks that offer newcomer packages which include unsecured credit cards usually with limits $1000. Sometimes more. If you need a higher limit you can get a secured card from most banks. Put some cash into a locked savings account and use that to secure your credit card.
Good luck.
