There's no office to visit in person. You need to apply to extend your open work permit online once you renew your passport. Hopefully that work permit isn't an IEC/WHV.
My wife had the same situation when we arrived (me on SP, her on SOWP). She got her work permit approved for the time her passport was valid. When she renewed her passport, she submitted an application online to extend her work permit and attached a letter explaining the whole situation. She got the new work permit approved.
Take into consideration that processing times for an open work permit are long, around 4-5 months. You must also submit it 30 days or more of your current work permit expiration date. And... you'll have to pay the fees (I believe it's $255).

hi there, could I ask if your wife first had her SOWP under your name (i.e. the principal applicant) in a joint application? I am the spouse with an expiring passport. However I am not sure if I should create my own IRCC account online or use the main applicant's account to apply -- since that would have contained all the biometrics application for both of us.

We both have a separate IRCC account. Whenever she had to submit an application on her own (like the SOWP extension) we did it from her account. Whenever we submit an application together, we do it from our account.
Find your UCI. If you create an IRCC account, you can add your UCI and it should link your biometrics.

Right, I do have my UCI. I probably will create my own IRCC account and perhaps update in this thread later on the outcome. So that it could eventually benefit anyone who's in the same situation! Thanks!
@andrews17 hi, sorry to bother with another question. I noticed there's an optional (?) form: Form: Schedule 1 - Application for a Temporary Resident Visa Made Outside Canada (IMM 5257). Did your wife fill this in?
I find it strange as I don't remember completing this form during initial application. Although this form is found under optional documents, when I clicked on the help button, it says we must provide a Schedule 1 declaration. I believe I am not asking for a temporary resident visa so I could skip this form..? Besides I am currently residing in Canada.
